Best Places to Eat on Sanibel Island
Sanibel Island is home to arguably the most beautiful shells in the world. It is also home to delicious seafood and drinks — making it a culinary escape.
I recently took a trip to Sanibel Island, located off the coast of Florida. There was nothing better than coming in off the beach in the evening to dive into a delicious meal. If you are looking for some great Sanibel eateries, look no further.
Timbers Restaurant and Fish Market
Timbers is a great spot to enjoy fresh seafood. And to make it even better, they offer a sushi menu Thursday through Friday (you have to ask for it when you are seated at the restaurant). My sister got a sushi platter, and I was definitely a bit jealous that I didn’t order that. I ordered a mojito to start (such a refreshing cocktail, this was my drink for the trip) and had a salmon dish for dinner. Because it was summer (the off season in Sanibel), the restaurant was very quiet, which was perfect for our first night being there after a day of travel.
Island Cow
Island cow is a place you have to hit, especially if it is your first time on the island. They have cocktails, Starbucks coffee, and favorites for every meal. I personally like this restaurant as a breakfast or lunch place. On my trip, I went here for lunch and got the Cowpoke Salad. Which was a combination of tuna and chicken salad on top of greens with cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, and an Island Vinaigrette.
Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille
Doc Ford’s is definitely a popular spot on the island, even in the off season. We went here twice and had to wait for about 25 minutes. Their menu has a variety of amazing options, even for those who are not seafood fans. And the star of the show is the rum flight (which no, I did not have)—so this is a must stop spot for rum lovers. I had a mojito (again!) which was delicious and refreshing. The first night we went there, I had fish tacos. They consisted of a white fish, purple cabbage, and a papaya pico de gallo. I also got the gluten free option so they were served on corn tortillas. They came with a side of rice and black beans. The second night I had cedar plank salmon, which was moist and delicious.
Mudbugs
If you love cajun food, then you have to go to Mudbugs (not everything on the menu is spicy, so also keep that in mind for those who like less heat). The atmosphere is unmatched, with beautiful twinkle lights hung all through the inside of the restaurant and ample outdoor seating. And to top it all off, they have live music 5-9 p.m. every night. We were seated on the outdoor patio, in a small romantic cafe table for two. To start dinner off, I ordered a berry mojito. This drink was absolutely amazing, the best of the trip. If you enjoy Starbuck’s Refreshers, this drink is for you. We ordered the fried calamari appetizer, which was covered in an amazing sweet chili sauce and green onions. For Dinner, I ordered grilled shrimp with dirty rice and coleslaw. Be sure to visit this spot on your vacation, it will not disappoint!
The Bubble Room
Actually located on Captiva Island (Sanibel’s close neighbor) This is a great dinner location if you are looking for something quirky. The Bubble Room has been around since 1979, and has remained unchanged since then. With vintage decor and toys from the 1920s, 30s, and 40s, there is unique decor everywhere you look. Be sure to take a peak at the Christmas room and take a picture in the tunnel of love. Their menu features tropical drinks, seafood, and more. Note that because this is a popular spot, there is often a wait but there is plenty to explore in the meantime, like their gift shop located right across the street.
