How Our Home Impacts Mood and Well-Being

At the end of the day, do you feel less stressed when you walk into your home? Or are you overburdened by clutter, harsh lighting, and things that do not make you happy? Here are some simple tips to cultivate a more serene-feeling environment in your home.
Lighting
This is a given. Some of us have to succumb to harsh lights in the office throughout the day, which isn’t the most attractive lighting. Having soft, warm lighting in our living rooms and bedrooms in the early morning and evening greatly impacts how we feel. We can wake up gentler with soft lights, and set our minds at ease in the evening when it is time to wind down.
Clutter
Having clutter in your home can really bring down the mood and create chaos. Your mind will have difficulty focusing on tasks because it will be too focused on clutter, even if you don’t realize it. It’s best to set time aside to really go through our belongings and donate what isn’t serving us. We often hold onto silly things like empty boxes, instructions from electronics, clothes we don’t fit into, and more. These things can be donated or thrown away to bring peace into our homes.
Textures
Textures play an essential role in our homes. We want to surround ourselves with textiles that are soft, comfortable, functional, and visually appealing. Natural textiles such as wool, cotton, cashmere, and linen can be especially comfortable. In the colder months, adding extra blankets onto the sofa and adding extra layers on our bed can have us feeling cozy all season. In the warmer months, linen and cotton bedding will keep us cool. Adding rugs that are soft on the feet, soft and functional cotton towels, and ultra-cozy pillows will all contribute to an improved mood.
A Quiet Space
Especially if you’re an introvert, having a quiet space to stow away is necessary in your home. Whether that’s a cozy reading nook, a chair set in the corner of your living room, or your bedroom, it’s important to have a place to reset and recharge. This is a place you can unplug and give yourself space from the busyness of life, read a good book, craft, or even take a nap. Having this time to ourselves can uplift us and make us more productive throughout the day.
