Are you decorating a room in your home? Put inspiration, colors, furniture ideas, and more together in one place using Canva.
In the beginning stages of design, it’s best to get all of your ideas together in one place. It’s also essential to have a visual to start to see how you would like different elements of your space to come together. Canva whiteboard is a powerful tool for creating a mood board and forming design ideas. Here’s how to get started crafting your own mood board.
Canva Whiteboards
Canva whiteboards are the perfect tool for brainstorming and creating an interior design mood board. A whiteboard provides you endless space to create, unlike other Canva templates that are specific measurements and used for specific purposes. Canva is a free resource, you just need to create a login to get started!
Currently in my Interior Design III class, we are working on doing design work for a 3,500 square foot apartment in Chelsea, New York City. Though the existing interior is very industrial with polish concrete and exposed brick, I am working on creating a Scandinavian inspired interior with soft lines, low lighting, and a feel that is minimalistic. Below is the current mood board I am working on for the living room for this project in Canva, updated in real time.

When you are looking to design a room, it’s a good idea to start with the basics. Gather images on Pinterest that inspire you and create a board with all of your ideas. From there, you can optionally draw out sketches of your room if you want to get a better visual. When you know the vibe you are going for, start first by selecting paint colors. Paint will set the tone for the rest of the room, it’s important to select colors that will complement other colors that will be present in furniture, textiles, etc. I personally find that Benjamin Moore paint is high on performance, offering an array of durable colors. For this project, I have selected the color Frosted Toffee to be used on the walls and ceilings in the living room. On the Benjamin Moore website, you can select “create a dollop” of any color for a digital dollop image, which is what I have copied and pasted to my Canva board.
Furniture Selection
The furniture you select for your mood board doesn’t have to be the final furniture you decide on. This board will ebb and flow as your idea changes, it is a jumping off point. Include photos from Pinterest that inspire you, and furniture picks from retailers. I like to link the website I found each piece of furniture directly to the picture so it is easily accessible. This is an excellent way to play around with how pieces will look together.
Other Decor Elements
Adding photos of potential plants, fabrics, linens, and other items that inspire you will help you to visualize your space. Again, linking the photos to where you found certain elements can be helpful when you are looking back and deciding what to incorporate into your space.
A Few Other Tips
You can copy and paste photos directly into Canva, there is no need to download photos to your computer. Use this as a living document, add whatever you need to it to help you complete the look of your space. Add any sketches you’ve done, and anything else that inspires you to your whiteboard!
