What to Look for When Thrifting

With the start of 2025, I look back at some of my favorite thrifty finds from the last year. Use this as inspiration for the year ahead.
A resolution that we could all probably get behind in 2025 is to feed into less consumerism, fast fashion, and impulse buys. I think a great way to do this is by visiting the thrift store when you are looking for a new addition to your home or wardrobe.
Never go into a thrift store with a strict checklist, gems will be found as you browse around. Or some days, you may not find anything, which is the nature of these locations.
Glassware
It’s common to have an assortment of glassware at a thrift store or antique shop. And the best part is that glasses often come in pairs or full sets with an enticing price tag. You can also find unique items with gorgeous detailing or patterns (like painted drinking glasses). Rather than buying cheap drinking glasses, thrifting them is a great option. There are usually many other assortments of glassware at these locations, such as vases or dishes.
Mug
This past year, I scored two Anthropologie mugs at my local Goodwill for $1 each. This is ideal compared to the $15 price tag for a new mug from Anthropologie. Mugs are always available at thrift stores; they are ideal for gifting or adding pieces to your home.
Candle Holders
It’s common to find taper candle holders at antique and thrift stores, often at a better price than buying new. These items are an excellent way to add a bit of character to your home and would look beautiful on a mantle or dresser. Even candle holders that show some age can be a beautiful addition to your home, especially if you are looking for a rustic or traditional look. For the holiday season, they can also be dressed up by adding a bow made out of ribbon to them. Other unique candle holders and seasonal candle decorations can be found when thrifting as well.
Vinyl Records
There’s always a ton of records at antique and thrift locations. If you have a record player, be sure to browse the shelves that have unique vintage tracks. Be sure to examine the condition of the record before purchasing, to assess if there are too many scratches that may affect the quality of the sound.
Tableware
In need of plates and bowls for your home? Dinnerware can be very pricy, or it can be cheap (and not hold up long term). Rather than investing in sub-par items at big box stores, you can often find gorgeous sets of dinnerware at your local thrift store. Locations often have Corelle dishes and stoneware.
