Spring cleaning can be so overwhelming, especially if you are new to full-time work, live in your first apartment, or are still living at home.

What is the best way to approach spring cleaning? I don’t know about anyone else, but I have a massive list of places in my space I’d like to deep-clean. Which I have found to be overwhelming while working a 9-5. Not to mention that I still live at home, so I’m always out, and not all the space is my own.

I have come to the conclusion that the best way to tackle spring cleaning is by doing small cleaning spurts throughout the day. Just give yourself ten minutes when you can (whether that’s when you are working from home, or after you get home from work/ other commitments). Or do cleaning in chunks. For example, I really want to go through all of my bathroom drawers and organize. So, if I stick to doing one drawer a day it is so much less daunting. Another good tip to keep your space clean is to pick up after yourself (after you eat, do your makeup, etc.). Get in a good discipline of keeping surface tops clutter-free.

Here are five spaces you should add to your spring cleaning list:

1. Your Car Exterior and Interior

Take your car to the car wash, or give it a rinse and scrub with the hose at home. You can clean the exterior of your car with water, a large sponge, and dish soap. Wipe down all the outside and inside of the windows. Wipe down the dashboard and interior of all the doors. Throw away any trash that you may have stashed up in there (we’ve all been there). Vacuum up dirt and dust. Spray down any weather mats you may have and use soap to clean off all the caked on mud. When you’re all done, add a nice new car freshener for a little extra splash of clean, Natural Life has some of the best car fresheners (and accessories). I keep car interior wipes in my center console to wipe up any dirt spots I may notice in an effort to maintain a clean space.

2. Go Through All Of Your Products And Get Rid Of Stuff You Aren’t Using

Makeup, perfume, hair care products, and shower products. You surely have some things you aren’t using or that are old. I had a crazy amount of Bath & Body Works body sprays that have probably been around for four or more years. Not to mention they aren’t the best for you. I went through and threw away things I knew were super old or that I just didn’t like anymore. It’s also helpful to note which products you may want to switch out for more natural, low toxic options. A while ago I made the switch from regular mascara to Honest brand, as well as regular foundation to Burt’s Bees BB Cream.

3. Clean Off Desk

Whether you work from home or are in the office, it’s a good idea to clean off your desk space. Clear everything off the top, and wipe down your desk with disinfecting wipes (or dust it if needed). Dust your desktop, keyboard, and wipe down screens with appropriate solution. If you have drawers in your desk, go through each of them and throw away what you do not need. Go through all papers and maybe cultivate a new filing system to avoid clutter. A great way to brighten up your space for spring is by adding a vase of flowers or a little plant to your desk.

4. Go Through Your Clothes

We all have clothes that we’ve held onto with the claim that “I might wear it again someday.” But we all know that does not happen. Pile all of your clothes onto your bed and assess which pieces you reach for the most. Then go through the rest of your clothing pieces that you do not find yourself reaching for. Put items into a donate pile that you know you will not be wearing again or that you’ve only reached for a few times. And anything with a tag still on it…donate! I promise you will never wear it.

5. Wash Sheets and Clean Under Bed

I know that it’s happened to me before, you get so tied up with work and other things that you wonder when the last time you’ve washed your sheets is…yes super gross but I also think super common. Spring is the perfect time to strip your bed and wash all of those sheets and pillow cases. Sometimes I even wash my pillow cases every week with my load of whites (since you are supposed to keep them super clean, especially if you are prone to acne). Now is also the time to pull out any random junk you are storing under your bed. Donate or throw away what you don’t need and find a place for the rest. For me, I know that I have picture frames under my bed that need to be hung up. Also vacuum under your bed! That’s the most likely place in your room for dust to collect.
