Exploring Hudson NY: What to Expect
Hudson is located in Columbia County of upstate New York. The location has been booming over the past few years. Here’s why.
Since 2020, a lot of New York City natives have been looking to upstate to beat the rush and take a breath. It’s no surprise that people have been flocking to Hudson to get the urban feel while living right next to the beautiful mountains. And with them these new residents have brought antique stores, coffee shops, and more.
Hudson is rich in antique stores, which are fun to browse through. Just note you have to have a very high budget to purchase most of the items available, many of which are kept in beautiful condition. Boutiques housing arm chairs, couches, pediment topped cabinets, tables, and statues delight of a different era in time. This spot is an interior designer’s dream when sourcing furniture for more high-end clients.
The first stop on my walk around town was Supernatural Coffee, where I snagged a matcha latte with oat milk for $7. The frothy sweet drink was the fuel I needed to adventure through the shops. On Saturdays until late November, you can browse through the farmers’ market between 6th & Columbia street from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., unfortunately I had missed it but I assume there were some nice offerings.
Walking down Warren street, you can pop into many antique and home goods stores as I mentioned above, such as Clove & Creek Hudson, Collage 20th Century Classics, and more. There are few clothing and jewelry store dispersed throughout as well. In the afternoon, I popped into Flowerkraut and interesting shop that is a combo florist and sauerkraut seller. I regret not going back for the kraut that caught my eye! I finished my afternoon with lunch at Grazin’ a quaint diner, where I got warm delicious chilli and fries on the side. I also highly recommend the lavender lemonade for a unique and sweet flavor.
Overall, I enjoy my afternoon in Hudson. I would say if you don’t love antique furniture, it is not the place for you. The area also has amazing hikes if you’d rather spend the day in nature and is nearby to Olana State Historic Site, which is a beautiful historic mansion, once home to painter Frederic Church, on a property overlooking the upper Hudson Valley.
