There are so many practical uses for Chat GPT in the home, from recipe ideas to shopping lists. But the AI platform can also make suggestions for DIY projects.

In 2025 we’re trying to be more earthy. Less toxins in the home, reusing, less waste. One great way to go about this is making DIY cleaners. I’ve been trying to find a way to replace glass cleaner (especially because the one I use always sems to give me a headache). Alas, I turned to chat GPT, asking the following…

“Recipe for a DIY non-toxic glass cleaner.”

It provided this recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for added shine)
  • 5-1o drops essential oil (I used mint, though ChatGPT recommended lemon or lavender)

Mix the Solution

I added all of these ingredients to a glass measuring cup and mixed them altogether. The mint essential oil was a nice addition to cut some of the acidic smell of white vinegar. Once all of the ingredients are mixed together, it would be best to add them to a spray bottle. You can either reuse a bottle from a previous cleaner, or there are plenty of options for glass reusable spray bottles. I personally didn’t have either so I stuck the solution in a used shampoo bottle (spray bottle is definitely a better option).

Put it to the Test

Then the experiment began: I started with a small vanity mirror then worked my way to windows and larger bathroom mirrors. I was surprised at how clean the glass surfaces were. I did use paper towel so there were some streaks leftover after cleaning, Chat GPT recommends using a microfiber cloth for cleaning the surface, and a second dry microfiber cloth for buffing the surface after cleaning.

Note: I did notice that in a room with high humidity, like when taking a shower, streaks appear on the mirror. This most likely was from the cornstarch in the mixture, I re-cleaned with just white vinegar and water and will see how that goes! The recipe with cornstarch did the trick everywhere else that doesn’t encounter shower steam.

Overall, this low-toxic, budget friendly cleaner is simple and effective! Definitely worth trying it with a microfiber cloth to achieve even better results—give it a go for a healthier, greener home!
