4 Things to Do on a Rainy Spring Day at Home

We all know April showers bring May flowers, so while spring is doing what it does best outside, make the most of your rainy day at home with these activities.

Usually the warm spring weather brings rain, especially in upstate New York. But the good news is that the rain brings luscious spring flowers and greenery, making the cold winter days a distant memory. Rainy days are the perfect excuse to cozy up at home or be productive around the house. So the next time a storm rolls in, be sure to do one of these activities to make the most of your day.

It’s Spring—Time to Clean!

If you’re cooped up inside and find that there’s nothing else to do, spring cleaning could be your answer. Spring is the perfect opportunity to freshen up your space and do a deep clean (especially if certain areas of your home have been collecting dust all winter). Here’s a list of areas to clean:

  • Shampoo your carpet – if you have a room in your home that is carpeted, this is the perfect time of year to get them shampooed (or do them yourself if you own a shampooer). You’ll be shocked by how much dirt and grime comes up from collecting over the winter..
  • Scrub tiles – tile flooring, tile showers, tile backsplashes. Give everything a good scrub, and be sure to get in the grout as well to get any gunk out. Your tile will look brand new!
  • Dust everything – even places you may not dust that often, like ceiling fans, baseboards, ceiling corners, lampshades, heaters, under your bed and couches.
  • The fridge – take every single thing out of your refrigerator. Throw out old food and anything past the expiration date (I know there’s at least one thing in your fridge that’s expired). Thoroughly clean all of the shelves and drawers in your fridge in the sink with dish soap, or wipe them down with a non-toxic solution.
  • Curtains – check the label on any curtains you have in your home, machine wash if you’re able, and otherwise give them a good dusting/ spot clean. Some curtains may need to be ironed or steamed as well if the tag says you can. Be sure to wash shower curtains as well!
  • Dog stuff – give your dog’s toys, collar, leash, bed, and bowls a good wash. Be sure to check labels to see what can go in the washer for an easy clean.

Pick Up a Book

When the new year rolls around, we all set goals. I believe a common goal is to read more. But sometimes life gets the best of us and we realize we haven’t picked up a good book in a few months. Whether you are a seasoned reader or want to get back into your reading grind, a rainy day is the perfect excuse to curl up with a good book. Sprawl out on the couch with a cozy blanket and a cup of your favorite tea close by (peppermint tea is my personal favorite). I have been reading Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale on and off, and hopefully will find a chance here soon to dive back in as it is such an inspiring novel.

Bake Something New or Try a New Recipe

The smell of something baking in the oven on a rainy day is one of the best comforts. Use this time to try a new scrumptious recipe. Pinterest is great for gathering recipe inspiration. Some delicious ideas include:

I recently made a brown sugar syrup recipe, and it made my house smell extra cozy on a dreary spring day. This recipe is a delicious, sweet addition for coffees or matcha lattes.

Get Your Scrapbook On

You don’t have to be an artist to scrapbook. In fact, they are allowed to be messy, whimsical, and loud. The pictures don’t even have to be the absolute best quality. A rainy, slow day is the perfect excuse to sit down and compile pictures you’ve been storing into a book that you can look back on. It’s also easy to print photos at a local Walgreens or similar. Michaels has everything you may need for scrapbooking, from books and journals, to paper and stickers. I love scrapbooking photos, cards, brochures, tickets, and stickers from various adventures. Keep track of memories throughout the year, or focus on travel. This is a creative habit that will help you feel calm and relaxed.
