Freezing temperatures and nights that seem bitterly dark, include these essentials in your bedroom for ultimate coziness this winter.
Temperatures have been hitting record lows in the northeast, and across the United States. The bitter cold weather has me dreaming of warm summer days and beach vacations. Winter is a time where many of us enter hibernation mode, which leads to nights curled up in bed binge watching our favorite comfort show. But how can we make our bedrooms the ultimate comfort zone to beat the winter blues?
Breathe Easy: Humidifier/ Air Purifier
On this blog, I love to talk about candles and creating a cozy vibe (which you should use candles in the winter!)—but here, let’s discuss something a bit more practical for maintaining comfort in the winter. First and foremost is a humidifier. In the winter the heat in our homes creates dry air, which leads to itchy skin, uncomfortable sinuses, and dry eyes. A humidifier can reduce some of these ailments and make your sleeping space so much more comfortable. Just know it is best to use distilled water in a humidifier, as it contains minimal impurities and can promote a longer life for your humidifier. Also, be sure to keep it clean! A dirty humidifier can cause a sinus infection (been there, done that and it wasn’t fun!).
Secondly, using an air purifier is a winter essential. Since the temps are so low, we don’t have the option to open windows and air out our homes, therefore, dust and dander can accumulate in our indoor air. This can contribute to things such as allergies, dry eyes, etc. An air purifier can help remove allergens, odors, pathogens, and improve respiratory health.
Amazon has some nice options for both an air purifier and humidifier.
Layered Pillows
Every cozy Pinterest bedroom has one thing in common: layers of soft comfy pillows. Pillows are that simple little accent that can make such a difference in the cozy appeal of a bed. There is no magic number for the amount of pillows you should have, but by layering different textures or pillow patterns, it is simple to create a comfy scenario.
Start with the basics: the first layer should consist of basic pillows that you use to sleep with—so this might be two pillows—that usually have covers that are the same color as your sheets (no patterns on the first layer). The second layer can be made up of two pillows with a pattern as the cover (can be normal size pillows or decorative square pillows, if you are using square you may want to use three here if you have a larger size bed). Lastly, use an even smaller pillow or a short long pillow as the accent. Think a chunky knit pillow, a shag pillow, or a complimentary pattern. I like the below example from Pottery Barn on Pinterest.
Block the Chill With Blackout Curtains
To really convey the vibe of hibernation, heavy blackout curtains can really add to the cocoon vibe of your winter bedroom. Heavier curtains can help keep window drafts at bay, preserving the heat. They can also make your room cozy and dark, especially if you are looking forward to sleeping in on a chilly winter morning.
These Crate & Barrel linen blackout curtains are a gorgeous option!
